Plant care tips! Persian Shield!

(stroh-bil-AN-thiss  dye-er-AY-nus)

Who says plants have to be green? This unbelievable

specimen is silver and purple, like the shield of a royal

Persian warrior. The long saw-toothed leaves are

iridescent silver and purple on top and bright purple

beneath, and grow from squarish stems of brilliant pur-

ple. Give the Persian-shield plenty of bright light, and

it will even give you small, bright purple flowers on a

little spike. Remember to prune this beauty now and

then so it will be nice and bushy when it reaches its full

height of 2 feet (60 cm). Choose its container carefully,

to accent its unusual color--a gleaming pewter pot

might be most effective.

Light: Medium light for growth; high light for flowering

(near bright east or south window).

Temperature: 60° to 80°F (15° to 27°C). Can tolerate

50°F (10°C) without damage.

Water: Allow the surface of the potting mixture to dry

out between waterings.

Humidity: Average (25% or more).

Fertilization: Apply every 1 to 2 months.

Propagation: Tip cuttings of 3 to 5 inches (7.5 to 12.5

  1. cm) and stem cuttings with 3 sets of leaves.

Special Care: Cut back to stimulate bushiness if plant

becomes leggy.

Common Problems: Check carefully for spider mites

on undersides of leaves; if present, spray with appro-

priate pesticide.
